Cambodia – a land where ancient and modern worlds collide to create a unique destination to study for your TEFL course in Siem Reap. It is the ONLY country in SE Asia where you can LEGALLY teach without a bachelor’s degree, and by coming here you’ll take the first step in an adventure that will change your life, as well as those of others!

You’ll receive 4 weeks of TEFL / TESOL training at Destination TEFL in Cambodia, and our comprehensive 140-hour course covers the following areas/subjects:

  • An introduction to South East Asian culture – to help your transition into the local classroom and community.
  • Teaching techniques – we provide you with models to teach beginners as well as advanced students, young learners and adults
  • Teaching the four skills of language: speaking, listening, reading and writing
  • Planning a course for special purposes (such as for a business)
  • Grammar – brushing up yours as a teacher, and techniques to teach grammar
    Phonics
  • Creating materials for lessons
  • Lesson planning
  • Suitable activities for the language classroom
  • Discipline in the classroom
  • Building rapport with your students, including warmers and coolers in the classroom.
  • Classroom management, covering all aspects
  • Teaching one-to-one, as well as larger classes
  • Teaching vocabulary
  • Understanding problems for Asian learners (understanding the differences between their language and English) as well as for other key languages, such as Spanish and Russian.
  • Error correction techniques
  • Preparing your CV/resumé, and tips for the interview process
  • Teaching business English
  • Teaching practices and assignments
  • You will have the opportunity to conduct several full lessons (teacher practices). These are observed by a trainer, and detailed and constructive feedback is given to you after each lesson, to help you improve for your next lesson, and your career to follow. (You will get an opportunity to teach both young learners and adults). Our qualified trainers will assist you with the lesson planning process.
  • Materials project: Here you will present the materials used for lessons, to the class.
  • A journal entry assignment
  • Various lesson planning and group work assignments
  • Various tests and tasks over the 4-week course, covering grammar, punctuation and a few other aspects covered in class. We work with our teachers to adequately prepare them for these tests. All content of the tests is covered during the course.

There is no final examination that determines your pass grade. Your final course result is determined by the combined marks of the assignments above, as well as on your participation and teamwork in class, attendance and behaviour.

A grade of at least 70% is required in order to pass the course. More than 50% of this grade is made up of marks for teacher practices.

Trainees are awarded with either a ‘pass’, ‘merit’, ‘high merit’ or ‘distinction’ on their certificates. All graduates also receive a report, and those who obtain a merit or higher, are also presented with a personalised letter of reference.

I have had the pleasure and privilege of attending both the 140-hour onsite training in Siem Reap earlier this year, as well as the 120-hour virtual course - more recently. I have derived immense value from both of these certifications. Tina – the Head Trainer – is beyond passionate and committed. This is evident in her tireless work ethic, patience, compassion, encouragement, generosity, and all the various offerings of support that she provides to her students - so naturally. Tina goes way beyond the call of duty to ensure continuous upskilling and holistic success. Her expertise and teaching style make for fascinating and impactful learning, alongside lots of fun, belly laughs, many wonderful new friends amongst peers and connections made.

The training centre in Siem Reap is based in the magnificent Isirafu Boutique Hotel, which becomes your home away from home. Here you will find beautiful, clean, spacious features and facilities, coupled by the most marvellous staff. Everyone ever ready to assist you, with big smiles and great enthusiasm. The restaurant is sensational and the kitchen staff are masterful at seamlessly catering to specific dietary requirements, including veganism.

The onsite training course empowers students in a myriad of ways and exposes them to teaching practicums at a local NGO. This was a remarkable experience. The virtual training equips students equally as multifacetedly and provides one-on-one, virtual practica - which were equally as significant. Each program educates and prepares students for both classroom based and online teaching alike.
My deep gratitude and appreciation to everyone within the Destination TEFL team and family!

Wow... What a nice course. Everyone is super kind and helpful. The knowledge of Tina - (the best teacher ever) is amazing and I find it easy to understand something she's explaining. They gave me confidence to stand in front of a whole class and teaching Khmer people is the absolute best! They are so polite. Sad to say bye to the good people that became family. But on the other hand excited to start the new journey. A big thanks to all!

The training is excellent. As a trainee here I feel as if I have really progressed over the last month and I feel super confident in the tools I have been taught to teach Khmer students. The directors are very transparent with you in terms of one needing to know all the ins and outs of this course and how job placements will work etc. If one is nervous that they won’t get their money’s worth doing this course - I can 100% say that everything about this course is worth it. From the hotel to the resources used and to the actual training itself. It’s wonderful experience filled with such fun as well!

Great course, a lot of fun but also very demanding. The teachers are amazing and very knowledgeable and helpful. Tina Hennessy was our teacher through most of the course and we all just loved her. She is an amazing teacher. Siem Reap is a wonderful place to stay while doing the course (the course takes place at the beautiful hotel where students stay - Isirafu boutique hotel). Keep in mind that you might end up working in Phnom Penh, which I hear is not as great as Siem Reap, but I am yet to experience. I would recommend this course for sure, but give yourself a month before joining to prepare. There are a lot of things that you need to do before travelling to Cambodia (even if they might tell you that everything can be done in a week's time).

I am absolutely stunned by the Destination TEFL, Siem Reap program and team! The in-depth course has given me the knowledge, skills and confidence to be an amazing TEFL/TESOL teacher! I enjoyed the teacher practicals as well as community outreach aspect of the course with CDP! I am also thrilled to have at least 3 job interviews for possible job placements lined up, even before graduation! I would highly recommend this program! Special shout out to Tina Hennessy (our head trainer) - she is such a warm, kind and passionate trainer!

    The Location

Tourism and development in Cambodia has exploded over the last two decades. The nation shares borders with Thailand and Lao on the West and the North, and Vietnam on the East and the Southeast as well as by the Gulf of Thailand. The mighty Mekong River dominates the landscape of Phnom Penh, and is the base of much of the recreational activities from boat trips to riverside restaurants. The river originates in mainland China, flows through Myanmar, Laos, Thailand before entering Cambodia.

Angkor Wat, a symbol on the Cambodian flag, is one of the most amazing attractions in South East Asia, and only five kilometres from Siem Reap – home to Destination TEFL. Although a relatively new discovery to the West, the ruins of Angkor were never really lost to the Khmers, who have used the monuments as religious sites throughout their history.

Siem Reap, just south of Angkor Wat, has blossomed from a relatively small backwater town into the fastest growing area in Cambodia. Siem Reap is a foodie haven, and has plenty of ‘non-ruin’ things to do.

Phnom Penh, the country’s capital, is where the majority of teaching jobs can be found. Here you’ll discover temples, markets and buzzing back streets. This bustling city fuses Cambodian, Chinese and French influences.

Cambodia is home to several islands, perhaps not as well-known neighbouring Thai islands, yet they have as much to offer – at a fraction of the price.

So why do your TEFL course in Cambodia?

    • Super friendly locals, who are eager to learn English

    • Great value for money, from food to transport, you can’t beat Cambodia

    • Rich culture and history

    • A foodie haven! From local Khmer food to Western delights, you’ll find endless options

    • Easy to get around – from using the ‘Grab taxi app’ to out of town bus trips, transportation is easy and cheap.

    • Cambodia is centrally located to visit other countries in SE Asia

    • It’s the only country where you can LEGALLY teach in SE Asia without a degree, and Destination TEFL has links to many schools to assist with job placement.

    • Low cost of living in relation to salary earned by teachers

    • Relatively easy visa and work permit process compared to other countries

    Accommodation

The above prices include SHARED accommodation during the course – The rooms are spacious twin shared with a fellow teacher (double rooms available for couples – subject to availability). Each room has an en suite private bathroom, cupboard and small fridge. All rooms are air-conditioned and will be serviced once a week.

Should you prefer a private room, there is a surcharge from $150 for the course period – and subject to availability. Breakfast is included in your package rate.
