Our CELTA course in Torbay is designed for potential teachers with little or no English language teaching classroom experience and is therefore considered an entry level qualification. The fundamental specifications of the course are provided by Cambridge ESOL which is a branch of the University of Cambridge. CELTA is an internationally recognised professional teaching qualification that is common in the field of teaching English as a foreign or second language.

CELTA Course

The length of the CELTA course in Torbay is 120 contact hours (6 hours a day over 20 days for the full time CELTA). In order to be eligible for the award of a certificate, candidates are required to:

  • Attend and participate in the course
  • Complete 6 hours of teaching practice
  • Observe 6 hours of lessons taught by experienced teachers
  • Submit 4 written assignments
  • Maintain and submit a portfolio of course work (i.e. lesson plans, self-evaluations, etc.)

Course Content

The course covers the following areas:

  • Language Analysis and Awareness
  • The Learner, the Teacher and the Learning/Teaching Context
  • Planning for Effective Teaching
  • Classroom Management Skills
  • Teaching Procedures and Techniques
  • Resources and Materials
  • Professional Development
  • Classroom Observation
  • Teaching Practice

Observed Teaching Practice (OTP)

An integral part of the course, OTP is undertaken in small groups of English language learners. A total of 6 hours’ assessed teaching practice is the requirement over the course which may be divided into a number of lessons lasting 40, 45 or 60 minutes. Feedback sessions, led by the course trainer who has been observing you, follow each OTP session and are also a key component of the course. Reflection on your teaching is part of the learning process on the course and you will be expected to contribute to the feedback on yourself and others.

Written assignments

These are the ‘Focus on the learner’ (which encourages you to find out about your learners’ backgrounds, needs and purposes in learning), the ‘Language related task’ (a review of your growing language awareness), the ‘Language skills related task’ (in which you consider how you could use an authentic text in the classroom) and the ‘Lessons from the classroom’ (in which you reflect on your strengths and weaknesses over the course). It is one of the requirements for a pass grade that you pass 3 out of the 4 assignments, but you are allowed to re-submit any or all of them if you don’t get it quite right first time.

Observation of experienced teachers

4 hours of this will be observation of your trainers teaching your TP students. The remaining 2 hours may be made up of video observations of particular lesson types, which are timetabled into the input sessions.

Maintaining your portfolio

Your portfolio will need to contain a lesson plan for every lesson you teach in OTP together with your self-evaluation of it and the trainer’s written evaluation, your completed written assignments and finally, your CELTA 5, a record-keeping booklet in which you record, amongst other things, the times of your teaching practice and observations of experienced teachers and a summary of your progress as discussed with your trainer in your mid-course tutorial.

Course fees

The total price is divided into: deposit and balance.

The deposit may be paid via a) credit card b) PayPal c) wire transfer d) Western Union.

The balance of the course fee must be paid by cash, PayPal or bank transfer directly to the training center on the first day of the course.

    FAQs

    Q What is CELTA?

Our most popular teacher training course is the Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) which is recognised all over the world. Thousands of people internationally choose CELTA each year to open up a whole world of exciting English language teaching opportunities. It can provide you with the skills, knowledge and hands-on practice to follow a rewarding career in teaching anywhere in the world. At the Torbay training center we will give you the support and guidance you need to help you to achieve this.

Q Does the CELTA certificate expire?

No, it is valid for life.

Q Why take a CELTA course?

As well as helping you to gain the skills and knowledge you will need as a TEFL teacher, there are other benefits; the CELTA certificate is one of the few qualifications that is recognised worldwide. It is accepted by all British Council and English UK recognised language schools in the UK and by most reputable organizations which employ English language teachers throughout the world, as well as by the voluntary sector (e.g. VSO). It is also a qualification accredited at level 5 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). It is also suitable for teachers who need an internationally recognised qualification.

Q Who can take the CELTA course?

CELTA is designed for people with little or no previous teaching experience. It provides you with the basic skills, knowledge and techniques that you need to start teaching English, and aims to improve your confidence in the classroom.
The CELTA course is perfect for people who are looking for a career change, who want to live and work in fascinating places around the world or who just want to teach whilst taking a gap year. CELTA can give you the training you need to adjust to a dynamic new profession.

However if you do have experience, the course will give you new teaching methodologies and techniques. For teachers without a formal qualification, it means the opportunity to further develop your teaching skills and help you secure a better teaching position.

Q What are the entry requirements?

    - You must be at least 18 years old
    - You should have the minimum level of education required for entry into higher education (e.g. 2 A levels in the UK)
    - If English is not your first language, you need to have a minimum language level equivalent to C2 on the Common European Framework (e.g. IELTS 8, CPE C or CAE A)

No previous teaching experience is needed, but you must have the potential to become an effective teacher and to complete assignments and assessments successfully. When we receive your application, we will invite you for an interview, preferably face to face. This will give you an opportunity to meet us and to see the school. It also gives us a good idea whether the fairly rigorous and demanding course is for you. To help us in assessing your potential and your language awareness, we will ask you to do a pre-interview task before you arrive and two short writing tasks on the day of the interview. In certain circumstances, we may be able to offer a Skype interview.

Q What does the CELTA course cover?

The CELTA course covers the principles of effective teaching and provides you with a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners and hands-on teaching practice.

The course will help you to develop:
    - knowledge of the English language – grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation
    - awareness of the learners – their needs and motivation
    - practical ability in developing the skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing
    - familiarity with materials
    - classroom management and lesson planning skills
    - techniques and procedures in presentation and practice of new language

Q How will I be assessed?

Assessment is continuous, based on six hours of teaching practice and four written assignments. You need to pass both elements to be awarded the CELTA Certificate. There is no final exam.

Q What does the timetable look like?

    - 50 hours of input sessions on all basic aspects of planning and teaching
    - 6 hours of teaching practice for each trainee with students of different nationalities and at two different language levels
    - Daily detailed feedback and discussion sessions with tutors where you will receive plenty of help with your planning
    - 6 hours of observation of qualified and experienced teachers
    - Individual tutorials to ensure you are getting the most from the course

Q How long and how much is the full-time intensive CELTA course?

Course length: 4 to 5 weeks (120 hours)
Hours: Monday to Friday approximately 08:45 – 17:00
Optional: Language Awareness Course - £90. This is an eight-hour course (over 4 days) which runs in the week before the 4 week CELTA course and the first week of the 5 week CELTA course.
